Highlights of the week

This week, we spoke with Toni Vernelli, international head of communications and policy at Veganuary, about expectations for the plant-based movement in 2025. 

We also sat down with Sandy De Houwer, global marketing director for Meat & Dairy Alternative Solutions at Cargill, about the latest R&D in the plant-based space. 

Meanwhile, the US alcohol industry’s stocks fell following calls for mandatory cancer warning labels on all alcoholic F&B products by the US Surgeon General. 

The US Food and Drug Administration set guidelines for maximum lead levels in baby food, despite calls from campaigners for mandatory regulations. 

In the UK, a new £15 million (US$18.6 million) government fund was established to donate leftover food from Christmas to homeless shelters, food banks and charities.

We spoke to Katie Glover, EMEA manager for Regulatory Affairs and Trading Law at NSF, about consumer demands for clearer F&B labeling in the UK

A European Commission report forecasted that poultry consumption and production in the EU will grow while beef production is falling. 

Also, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced it will extend its anti-dumping probe into EU brandy, potentially easing tensions between Brussels and Beijing. 

India’s sugar production declined by 16% year-on-year to 9.5 million metric tons since the season began in October 2024 due to a dip in output, according to reports. 

Lastly, Washington State University highlighted that leading apple-producing regions in the US are facing major challenges brought on by climate change.
