Innova Market Insights data indicates a 97% average annual growth of ethical packaging and environment claims in global cosmetic launches from July 2019 to June 2024. Sixty percent of these launches were in Face/Body Cosmetics, with the fastest increase in Eye Cosmetics.

Red seaweed is being developed as a biomaterial replacement for single-use plastic in the personal care industry. 2M Sustainable Packaging Technologies (SPT) has secured an Innovate UK Smart Grant to develop the product. This solution is in collaboration with FlexSea, a sustainable packaging company that has created the seaweed-derived biomaterial.

A promising breakthrough in sunscreen technology brings the natural UV-blocking ability of lignin, a byproduct of the pulp industry, one step closer to high-performance use in cosmetics. The upcycled product could be an alternative to synthetic sun-blocking ingredients. Researchers also made a breakthrough in the sunscreen color to match a range of skin tones.
