EU to update HMO marketing regulations, DSM acquires Glycom for US$826m
In nutrition news this week, EU Regulation announced it is to set stricter marketing requirements for human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). In the same space, DSM acquired Glycom in a US$826 million move to boost its HMO portfolio and Danone launched a digitally-enabled data service for infant formula applications in a move to promote transparency. DuPont joined forces with MRM Health to develop microbiome-based therapeutic solutions, while Mako Medical launched a DNA test kit that customizes meal plans to optimize athletic performance.
Meanwhile, the CBD space is booming within skin care NPD, despite regulatory hurdles. Montmorency tart cherries are linked to improved sports performance, according to new research, while green tea extract may ameliorate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In further research news, adhering to a plant-based diet over animal products could counteract unfavorable microbes known to increase risk of heart disease in women, a US study found. Lastly, Hum Nutrition launched a vaginal microbiome health supplement to prevent urinary tract infections.

Brazillian company Beraca introduced a complex of Amazonian oils marketed as a "natural and safe alternative to cannabidiol". Tapping into the skin-gut axis, AxisBiotix entered an agreement with Winclove Probiotics to develop and manufacture a probiotic food supplement to help manage symptoms of mild-medium psoriasis.

In the same week, Zeria Healthway’s supplement "Yasuragi Life – Peaceful life," which is based on the active ingredient Extramel produced by Robertet, obtained an anti-stress health claim from the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan. Lastly, The Vitamin Shoppe launched the fitfactor Weight Management System, inspired by consumer research, to promote healthy nutrition.

FrieslandCampina was highlighting its ingredients for early life nutrition at FiE 2019 in Paris, particularly spotlighting its new Vivinal MFGM, which has benefits for cognitive and brain developments in infants, children and mothers. What’s so special about the ingredient? Timo Faber, Market Segment Manager, explains that suppliers can use the dry blend at the end of their supply chain, increasing flexibility and keeping all the bioactive components very active.
In nutrition news this week, a DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences endorsed study found certain probiotic strains to benefit mood and ameliorate stress. Lycored revamped its interactive educational platform "Lycopedia" to raise awareness for its ingredients and Evonik Animal Nutrition launched its Precision Livestock Farming tool for animal nutrition in the Middle East.
