California’s UPF crack down | US FDA redefines “healthy” | ADM talks pet nutrition trends



This week in nutrition news, the US state of California revealed it would crack down on ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and food dyes in school lunches. At the same time, the US FDA updated its definition of “healthy” for food labels to increase diet quality.

Meanwhile, ADM spotted personalization and wellness, such as gut health and skin and coat care as key pet nutrition trends for 2025. 

Ahead of the company’s upcoming webinar, we sat down with experts from dsm-firmenich to discuss the latest research on omega-3s’ health benefits. We also talked with ADM, Cargill, dsm-firmenich and FrieslandCampina Ingredients about the top nutrition trends of 2025.

In business news, Univar Solutions entered into a distribution partnership with dsm-firmenich for beauty and skin care ingredients and the Kaneka Corporation revealed it won a patent infringement lawsuit for its proprietary ubiquinol stabilization process. 

New research found that circadian-based nutrition could aid in muscle recovery, energy and cognition, while a separate study linked Ahiflower omega fatty acids to gut and liver health. 


Lastly, we spoke with several leading suppliers about the latest infant nutrition innovations.
