This week in industry news, ExxonMobil filed a counter lawsuit against California Attorney General Rob Bonta and various environmental groups. We spoke to Patrick Boyle, corporate accountability attorney at the Center for International Environmental Law, for his view on the lawsuit.
Zero Waste Europe’s founder, Joan Marc Simon, blamed oil-producing countries for the “low-ambition” outcomes of the UN Global Plastic Treaty negotiations.
In Australia, Packamama obtained a AUD$100,000 (US$62.847,00) grant from the government to help test the viability of sustainable packaging for premium wines, longer shelf life and exported products.
In New York City, Earth Brands equipped the Barclays Center with compostable food packaging for sports and entertainment events.
In research news, UK scientists created “self-healing” plastic for durability and shelf life expansion and Fraunhofer IVV developed peatland plant-based paper to reduce Europe’s wood-sector dependence and chemical usage.
Meanwhile, US researchers at Portland State University found particles from plastic packaging in the edible tissues of fish and shrimp near Oregon’s shores.
In paper innovations, McKinley Packaging opened a corrugated box manufacturing plant in Texas and Smurfit Westrock launched a paper pallet wrap to lower supply chain emissions.
